Atlantic
The sea sings over itself
Recedes like a thought
Falls again over the beach
With its fan of flowers and foam
The sea whispers its cold chant
In harmonies of waves and constellations
The steam raises its rampart
Draws phantoms on the shore
A seagull cuts its face
In the shade of its still flight
Its whiteness holds the song in the sand
beating windless in the morning
DIARIO (Fragmento)
X
Providence

Providence
The factory’s courtyard beards moles
Skin tattooed with zeal
The music moaning in the corners
The musicians running away from the light in a pronouncement
The mornings especially the mornings
In a silence where the metals talk
A dialogue of keyboards-blankets-pages-blessed coffee-mate
The immobile torrent of ice
A movie for no one
History walking everywhere
Bloody bricks of the slave
A writer cursed by fertility
A sidewalk to slide through lukewarm yearnings
Dust in the corners
The shelter of an embrace and the table of the shipwrecked
The front line speechless or horrified
The collection of windows the nudity of trees
Its party dresses
Food carnival mask shade
An oily line at the corner of the lips
The knife always over the table
A rat sliding over the tunnel
The obscene jubilation of atriums
A speech and a justification
A question asking exile
This trip as punishment
The reformulation of words
The discovery of an abyss and sordid joy
A mutilation by virtue of silence
A picture out of habit
A sum of faces separating stars
A permanent cloud with neither rain nor storm
An unbearable list without order or accord
This right here above all things
An illusion unleashed in the basements
An empty building in the middle of the night
A parade of feathers under the rain
Someone crying out disgrace in the middle of a party
The furious obsession for your smile
Your smile and its plastic riddle
All the knowledge and its shame
Another brick on the yellow path
El oficio
I
El oficio de vivir de prisa
entre metal y despojo
es más bien una disciplina
en la que se somete al espíritu
Se simula el pellejo en el proceso
presagiando
The Business
I
The business of living in a rush
between metal and plundering
is more like a discipline
where you are submitting yourself to the spirit
The simulated hide in the process
portending
births monuments pilgrimages
Life vibrates like a swarming hide
in wide open wounds
like ripened pomegranate
II
This business is forged in hunger
panic trembling
in death’s macabre calculations
on ledges in hallways
markets gardens
love’s intentions
and its liberated storm
lovers children
palpitations of dead soldiers
the total machinations of time
occurrences falling on tables
condiments conversations
envy sobs
deep inside Pandora’s box
in every which way of faith
of what has been sufficient
to shove circumstances
into happenings that mute memory
the business of going on living
with shadows covering the terrible
goes on draining the eyes
Because time traces a bridge without destination
The ether congregates in its metallic terror
every second erects eras and their demise
Because we aren’t able to cry and our hand trembles
cause of the atom lodged between swaying and sentencing
cause of the wine piercing the rock of doubt
meaning will never stop self-destructing
cause the inevitable tightens the fist of circumstance
III
This business was not dictated to me by silence
Let alone by night or the abyss
I did not learn it in bars
in the papers the obituary the annals
I did not find it in always aging history
I did not pray for it in childhood or heresy
I did not conjure it up hissing at the moon
It did not appear like bad fortune or tradition
It did not interject a riddle
covering the vestiges of the shade
This uncertain business of going on living
I did not find in books
nor in the shadows of the metropolis
not only love gave it to me:
I perceive it with each step
with every hammered point on the page
with the sunlight pestering my eyesight
with the moon as witness accomplice judge
the song or music of dry leaves
with each footstep chasing after the horizon
with each mountain and valley hollow
with the desert’s extended eloquence
and the plumpness of the sea at the reef
in the sand’s smooth voracity
in the weather-beaten infancy of the hills
in the unique voice of the cemeteries
in that lost pained look
in the kids without contract not discovering even war
with all those weary people smileless tearless
their gait backlit by wine
with smoke and its murky morning screens
with the domestic shouts of the market
still farther miniscule adrift
and in illusion in yearning
the past’s flaming imposition
in the pulpit and burial
in the condolence spilled on the shoulder
in prison walls
held to a chord blasting the years
in the mask of the night after daybreak
The business of living does not fit in the present.
